Family Day Celebration For ISCOS Members
Singapore, 20 June 2010 - Some arrived in uniform, showing a united family ready to participate in the telematch games. Others came with their babies in stroller, and still some attended with their in-laws and close relatives.
They were the ISCOS members and their families who took part during the Family Day celebration at Pasir Ris Park. Around 300 crowd came on a Sunday morning, excited to spend some quality time with their spouses and children.
Organized by ISCOS (Industrial & Services Co-operative Society Ltd), the theme of the Family Day is “Be My Super Hero”. The event aims to strengthen family ties, prevent the disintegration of family units and inculcate its members’ children with positive life values.
Mr Michael Palmer, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC was the Guest-of-Honour. Quoting a famous line from a super hero, Spiderman, “With great powers come great responsibility”, he urged the fathers to help their children make greater sense of their lives.
“As super heroes, or parents, we have the power to impart values through example. We do not need to be perfect to do that, but even through simple acts such as accepting the second chances that have been given to you can have an impact on our children,” Mr Palmer shared.
“Although we sometimes make mistakes, I firmly believe that it is not the failures that dictate how our children see us but it is how we get up and move on despite our bruises and setbacks... They treat us as a super hero, always wanting to hang out with us, do things with us. They are also thrilled when they receive our attention and most of all, our children want to be like us,” he added.
Since ISCOS members’ children are confronted with their parents’ past, it is important for them to be able to look up to their parents as their life heroes and good role models. Most of the children attending the Family Day are also involved in the ISCOS Fairy Godparent Programme, which seeks to build up their self-esteem through a series of enrichment and academic activities. Through this Family Day,
ISCOS hopes to bring its members and their families closer through memorable activities.
There were fun stalls, face & body painting and telematch games that promoted parent-child bonding. Children enjoyed magician’s acts and other stage performances. Culminating the celebration is a picnic-by-the-beach lunch for the whole family, raffle prizes and goodie packs.
ISCOS Family Day is highly supported by “Dads for Life”, a national fathers’ movement that seeks to inspire, mobilize and involve fathers to become good influencers in their children’s lives.
A number of companies have come forward to show support to this meaningful event. Most of them have contributed gift items that will be distributed to the families. These companies include: NETS, Yellow Pages, Esun International, Pasta Mania, McDonalds, OSIM, Secret Recipe, SPH Magazines, and many others.
